Nashville Retreat: Year-Round Screened Porch
A screened porch built around a masonry fireplace and exposed beams, designed to stay comfortable well past the end of the Tennessee summer.
The original plan separated cooking from everywhere else in the house, which is exactly what this family did not want. Opening it up meant moving services rather than simply replacing surfaces, so plumbing and electrical were rerouted before any cabinetry was ordered.
The island does the real work here. It carries prep space, seating and a substantial share of the storage, which let the perimeter stay calmer than it would otherwise need to be.
Long-lead items were ordered before demolition began. That is the least visible decision in the whole project and the one that kept the schedule honest.
