A screened porch built around a masonry fireplace and exposed beams, designed to stay comfortable well past the end of the Tennessee summer.
Where the existing plan works, keeping it is the most sensible thing a homeowner can do with a budget. Here the footprint stayed exactly where it was and the money went into cabinetry, stone and lighting, which is what anyone standing in the room actually experiences.
Flat-panel cabinetry rewards precision, because there is no detailing to hide a gap. Scribing to walls that were never quite square took longer than the installation itself.
Lighting was planned as three separate layers, task, ambient and accent, and wired before the drywall closed up.
